Can I Put Metal Over My Shingles?
Short answer: in most cases, yes. A standing seam metal roof can go over one layer of sound asphalt shingles. There are a few things that have to be true first, and we check all of them before we quote it.
When metal over shingles works
Going over the existing roof means no tear-off, less mess, and less cost. It works well when the roof deck underneath is solid, the shingles are lying flat, and there is only one layer of shingles currently on the roof. We form the new standing seam panels on site to the exact length of each run, so there are no lap seams across the roof — which is exactly where retrofit metal roofs tend to leak.
When it doesn't
We will not go over shingles if the deck is soft or rotting, if there are already two layers of roofing up there, or if the shingles are curled and buckled badly enough that a flat panel won't sit right. In those cases the honest answer is a tear-off and a fresh metal roof, and we'll tell you that when we look at it.
How we do it
We bring our portable roll former to your property and run each panel from raw steel coil, cut to the actual length of the roof. We install solid underlayment over the shingles, set the panels with hidden fasteners, and finish the ridge, valleys, and trim to match. Because the panels never ride on a truck, there's no shipping damage and no waiting on a factory order.
Want us to look at yours?
The only way to know for sure is to get on the roof and look. Call (660) 341-4823 and we'll come out, tell you what we see, and quote it in plain language — whether that's going over the shingles or taking them off.
